Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch (1982)

Valley Girl is a song created by Moon Unit Zappa and her father, the legendary musician Frank Zappa. The song was released on Frank Zappa’s 1982 album Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch. Moon, who was just 14 at the time, supplied the melodic phrases.

Initially the song was intended to make fun of the vapid, air-headed “Val Gal” image, but the single became a nationwide phenomenon. Indeed, there was a significant increase in “Valspeak” slang usage, often for comedic benefit. The surprise hit song was also included on the album Strictly Commercial.
