Irving Berlin’s White Christmas

The Most-Recorded Christmas Song of All Time

Irving Berlin was known to stay up all night writing music and lyrics. White Christmas was a song he created during one such session. In the morning he reportedly told his musical secretary, “I just wrote the best song I’ve ever written–hell, I just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written!”

White Christmas will forever be associated with Bing Crosby, who debuted the holiday tune on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas Day, 1941. The following year, the song was introduced on a large scale in the musical Holiday Inn. In the film, Bing Crosby sang a duet with Marjorie Reynolds. The song received an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Another Bing Crosby musical, White Christmas, starring Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen, was the highest-grossing film of 1954.

White Christmas has been covered by hundreds of artists, including Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, Doris Day, The Partridge Family, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Taylor Swift, Boy George, and Rod Stewart. According to the 2008 Guinness Book of Records, Bing Crosby’s recording of the popular Christmas song is the biggest selling single of all time!

Although Johnny Marks was Jewish, he created a number of other Christmas hits, including Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, A Holly Jolly Christmas, and Silver and Gold. Johnny Marks founded St. Nicholas Music in 1949 and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1981. Introduced by rock and roll legend Chuck Berry in 1958, the holiday classic has since been covered by numerous artists and is sometimes referred to as Run, Run, Rudolph.

The popular Christmas song is strikingly similar to Chuck Berry’s major 1958 rock and roll hit Johnny B. Goode. Indeed, it has appeared in many feature films, including Cast Away, Diner, Home Alone, Jingle All The Way, The Santa Clause 2, Stealing Christmas, and Deck the Halls.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus has been a popular Christmas song for more than six decades. The tune has been covered by dozens of artists, including The Jackson 5, Bobby Sherman, Reba McEntire, Amy Winehouse, John Mellencamp, Tiny Tim, and RuPaul.

The popular Christmas song was originally recorded by 13-year-old Jimmy Boyd on July 15, 1952 and reached #1 on the Billboard pop singles chart by the end of the year.

The Roman Catholic Church in Boston initially condemned the record because the song’s lyrics combined sex (kissing) with Christmas. Young Jimmy Boyd met with the Archdiocese to explain the true intent of the song. After all, mistletoe was part of Christmas, wasn’t it? The meeting was a success and the ban was ultimately lifted.
