The Ballad of Jed Clampett (Excerpt)
Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed
Then one day he was shootin’ at some food
And up through the ground came a bubblin’ crude …

They Loaded Up the Truck and Moved to Beverly … Hills That Is

The Beverly Hillbillies

Created by Paul Henning

In 1961 Buddy Ebsen was ready to retire from show business when he was offered the patriarch role in a pilot about hillbillies who strike it rich and relocate to southern California.

The Jed Clampett role was originally conceived as a hick. Buddy Ebsen would only agree to do the show if Jed was made to appear smarter. Enter Max Baer Jr. as Jethro Bodine, master of the show’s less than brainy lines.

Veteran character actress Bea Benaderet was initially considered for the role of Granny, but producer Paul Henning deemed her too busty to portray the rugged mountaineer character he had in mind. She suggested her friend Irene Ryan. It’s hard to imagine anyone but Irene Ryan as Granny. Indeed, her screen test clinched the deal and is included as an extra on one of the show’s DVD sets.

Wholesome Donna Douglas, well known for her appearance in the classic Twilight Zone episode, “Eye of the Beholder,” rounded out the family as animal lover Elly May.

Fun Fact
Without her signature Granny makeup and wardrobe, the pretty actress was seldom recognized in public.

Granny’s Beverly Hillbillies Cookbook

Here’s a great gift idea for Clampett fans. Which of Granny’s specialties will they be tempted to try? Choose from Corncob Jelly, Silver Spoon Bread, Granny’s Nerve Tonic, Jest Plain Ol’ Apple Pie, Robert E. Lee Tomato Pie, Big Hollywood Agent Cheese Soup, Pot Passer Possum and Sweet Taters. As Jed would say, We-l-l-l-l Doggies!

I did so many of those jobs in real life that Jethro did on the show. I was a producer, a director and even a fry cook. I haven’t been a brain surgeon, but I’m working on it.

At 24, my head was as shiny as a cue ball on a billiard table. I naturally thought this meant curtains. Actually, I found it helped. When I was too young to play real character parts, they mistook me for older because of the bald noggin. I got juicy roles right from the start.

The Shady Rest Hotel

It is Run by Kate … Come and Be Her Guest

Welcome to Petticoat Junction. The opening titles of the series featured a display of petticoats hanging on the side of a large railroad water tank where Kate’s three daughters are bathing. The “junction” in the title refers to the Shady Rest Hotel, situated at a crossing of two train lines.

Bea Benaderet as Granny?
Bea Benaderet was originally considered for the role of Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies. When Bea saw her friend Irene Ryan at the audition, she told Paul Henning, ‘There’s your Granny!’

Petticoat Junction

Forget About Your Cares … It’s Time to Relax

Producer Paul Henning wrote the series for Bea Benaderet, one of his favorite character actresses. She worked alongside radio and television stars Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, George Burns, and Gracie Allen. She provided the uncredited voice for many Warner Bros. cartoon characters and was the first actress to voice Wilma Flintstone’s best pal, Betty Rubble. According to Linda Henning, her father felt that Bea Benaderet had paid her dues and deserved to headline her own series.

Paul Henning also created The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres. Edgar Buchanan portrayed Uncle Joe on all three shows. The gravelly voiced actor had made his living as a dentist, in a practice shared with his wife. At age 38 Edgar Buchanan turned the business over to her and began his long and successful acting career. His dentistry skills came in handy on the set — he once pulled the tooth of his long-time stand-in, Jack Henderson.

Like Edgar Buchanan, Frank Cady portrayed his character Sam Drucker, the congenial general store owner, on all three of Paul Henning’s shows. His final acting credit is for the reunion special Return to Green Acres which aired in 1990. Frank Cady stayed with Petticoat Junction for its entire seven-year run, along with co-stars Edgar Buchanan and Linda Henning.

Bea Benaderet as Ethel?
Vivian Vance fans might be surprised to learn that Bea Benaderet was Lucille Ball’s original choice for Ethyl on I Love Lucy. At the time Bea had a regular role on The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show and couldn’t accept the offer.

What’s the secret to playing Sam Drucker? I just play myself. Sam Drucker and I are old friends. I played him on Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies and we were going strong until 1971, when Fred Silverman canceled every show with a tree in it.
