It’s the Place To Be!

Though decidedly corny today, Green Acres was a trail blazer in the 1960s. It was only the second television series to show a husband and wife sleeping in the same bed (Samantha and Darrin Stephens were the first sitcom couple to share a bed).

Moreover, the show’s distinctive theme song was the first to be sung by the stars of a television sitcom. He likes fresh air, she likes Times Square. He likes chores, she likes stores.

Goodbye, city life! Ultimately, Oliver Wendall Douglas prevails, and that’s how he and his glamorous wife Lisa end up in Hooterville for six seasons. Ironically, it’s Lisa who adapts well to country life. Oliver, the only farmer to ride his tractor in a three-piece-suit, proves incapable of growing a thing.

Forget About Your Cares … It’s Time to Relax

Producer Paul Henning wrote the series for Bea Benaderet, one of his favorite character actresses. She worked alongside radio and television stars Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, George Burns, and Gracie Allen. She provided the uncredited voice for many Warner Bros. cartoon characters and was the first actress to voice Wilma Flintstone’s best pal, Betty Rubble. According to Linda Henning, her father felt that Bea Benaderet had paid her dues and deserved to headline her own series.

Paul Henning also created The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres. Edgar Buchanan portrayed Uncle Joe on all three shows. The gravelly voiced actor had made his living as a dentist, in a practice shared with his wife. At age 38 Edgar Buchanan turned the business over to her and began his long and successful acting career. His dentistry skills came in handy on the set — he once pulled the tooth of his long-time stand-in, Jack Henderson.

Like Edgar Buchanan, Frank Cady portrayed his character Sam Drucker, the congenial general store owner, on all three of Paul Henning’s shows. His final acting credit is for the reunion special Return to Green Acres which aired in 1990. Frank Cady stayed with Petticoat Junction for its entire seven-year run, along with co-stars Edgar Buchanan and Linda Henning.

If you take a left at the rock that looks like a bear, and a right at the bear that looks like a rock, you’ll end up at Fort Courage, home of television’s beloved sitcom, F Troop.

Politically incorrect by modern standards—the F Troop theme song includes the words paleface and redskin—F Troop symbolizes a simpler time when television shows were allowed to laugh at race and religion without fear of reprisals. None of the regular Indian characters were played by Native American actors.

Many of the Hekawis were played by veteran Yiddish comedians employing classic Yiddish shtick. Most notably, Medicine Man Roaring Chicken was portrayed by legendary actor and voiceover talent Edward Everett Horton.

In 1961 American television audiences were introduced to the most famous talking horse of all time. Mister Ed was no ordinary horse. In addition to holding in-depth conversations with his owner Wilbur Post, Mister Ed flew an airplane, played chess and ping pong, schmoozed with Hollywood celebrities, and even rode a surfboard.

The show lasted six seasons and attracted a number of notable guest stars, including Clint Eastwood, Zsa Zsa Gabor, George Burns, Donna Douglas, Nancy Kulp, Leo Durocher, Vin Scully, Abigail Van Buren (Dear Abby), and film legend Mae West who was a personal friend of the show’s producer, Arthur Lubin. Mister Ed won a Golden Globe award for Best TV Show, Comedy in 1963.

Bamboo Harvester was trained by Les Hilton. Ed’s stable companion was a quarter horse named Pumpkin who also served as Bamboo Harvester’s stunt double. Pumpkin later appeared in the popular sitcom Green Acres.

Mister Ed was the first television series to debut as a midseason replacement. The situation comedy aired in syndication from January 5 to July 2, 1961, and then on CBS from October 1, 1961 to February 6, 1966. The star of the show is Mister Ed, an intelligent palomino American Saddlebred, “played” by gelding Bamboo Harvester and voiced by Allan Lane. When an episode called for Ed to sing, his voice was provided by the musically trained actor Sheldon Allman. Ed’s solo line at the close of the show — I Am Mister Ed — was sung by Jay Livingston, the theme song’s composer.

Rumors circulated for years that Mister Ed’s talking effect was achieved by applying peanut butter to the horse’s gums. In later interviews Alan Young explained that he invented the story. Happily, Mister Ed’s young fans seemed satisfied.

Much of the program’s humor is at the expense of Ed’s owner Wilbur Post, the only person with whom Ed will speak. Arthur Lubin chose Alan Young to play Wilbur because he “just seemed like the sort of guy a horse would talk to.” Connie Hines was delightful in the role of Carol Post, though the show’s story lines focused on the relationship and antics between Wilbur and Mister Ed.

Wilbur speaks! Mister Ed’s owner reminisces about one of the most beloved classic television shows. Alan Young began his show business career as a child radio performer. By the 1950s he was starring in The Alan Young Show and winning Emmys. When CBS refused his request to adopt a three-camera film technique developed by Desi Arnaz and Al Simon, Alan’s live show floundered and was eventually canceled. His next television role, as the sidekick to a talking horse, put his career back on track. Mister Ed was one of a handful of syndicated shows picked up by a network.

Here We Come … Walkin’ Down the Street

Based loosely on The Beatles’ films A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, a sitcom called The Monkees featured the antics of a fictional pop-rock group. When they came walkin’ down the street in 1966, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Mike Nesmith were virtual unknowns.

A six-week crash course in improvisational acting with director James Frawley paid off. The four actors gelled as a team and morphed into a real pop group. After an auspicious start—The Monkees original pilot set a new ratings low for a pilot—the show went on to dominate its time slot for the entire 58-episode run from 1966 to 1968. In 1967 the show won an Emmy award for Outstanding Comedy Series. The show pioneered avante garde film techniques like improvisation, jump cuts, breaking the fourth wall, and free-flowing, loose narratives. James Frawley also landed an Emmy award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy.

We’re Too Busy Singing … To Put Anybody Down

When Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork joined forces in 1966 to portray The Monkees, the actors provided vocals under the supervision of music producer Don Kirshner. Downtime on the television production set allowed the fictional band members to develop their musical and songwriting skills. They eventually earned the right to supervise all musical output under the “Monkees” brand, and also performed live during several concert tours.

The show was cancelled after just two seasons in 1968, but the band continued to release records until 1970. In addition to The Monkees theme song, the group’s international hits include Last Train to Clarksville, I’m a Believer, (I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday, and Daydream Believer.
