Gilligan’s Island is wherever you want it to be in your mind.

Seven Stranded Castaways

The Original Survivors

They’re the most famous survivors of all time … Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the Professor and Mary Ann. A now legendary and much-parodied three-hour-tour left our favorite castaways shipwrecked on an uncharted desert isle for three television seasons from 1964 to 1967. Despite their deserted status, a revolving door of guest stars kept the erstwhile S.S. Minnow passengers and crew occupied with a variety of entertaining situations each week.

When the show’s creator, Sherwood Schwartz, originally pitched the show to the networks he envisioned a drama, rather than a comedy. He wanted the castaways to represent a microcosm of society, working together to survive. Viewers embraced the seven stranded castaways. Gilligan’s Island ran for 98 episodes–the first 36 episodes were filmed in black and white, though they were later colorized for syndication. The show’s second and third seasons, as well as all three TV movie sequels were filmed in color.

The show enjoyed high ratings during its original run, and grew in popularity over decades of syndication. The show often ran in the late afternoon and was a hit with school kids. Decades later, Gilligan is celebrated as an American pop cultural icon.

I sang in the glee club and church choir, but I never sang a solo. I never thought of myself as a singer, and that might have crossed your mind, too.

The Carol Burnett Show

Produced at CBS Television City’s Studio 33
(The Bob Barker Studio)

The Carol Burnett Show aired on the CBS network from September 11, 1967 to March 29, 1978, during which time 278 episodes were produced. In addition to Carol Burnett, the popular variety show starred Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner, Tim Conway, and Dick Van Dyke.

Viewers embraced the show’s comedic sketches, and several are legendary. In Went With the Wind, a parody of Gone With the Wind, Carol Burnett portrayed Scarlett O’Hara in the famous gown made from a window curtain—including the curtain rod! The popular soap opera, As the World Turns was spoofed in recurring sketches called As the Stomach Turns. The long-running show won 25 prime-time Emmy Awards, and was listed as one of Time magazine’s “100 Best TV Shows of All Time.” The show was also ranked #17 on TV Guide’s list of the “60 Greatest Shows of All Time.”

The program ended with Carol singing the show’s signature theme song and tugging her left ear. Carol’s Theme, also known as I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together was written by Carol Burnett’s husband, Joe Hamilton. Regular viewers anticipated her ear tug at the end of each show. The gesture was a message to Carol Burnett’s grandmother who had raised her, letting her know that she loved her. The tradition continued even after her grandmother passed on.

Laverne & Shirley

Starring Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams

Laverne & Shirley, a spin-off of the popular sitcom Happy Days, aired on ABC from 1976 to 1983. The girls were roommates who had jobs as bottlecappers at a Milwaukee brewery. By the second season Laverne & Shirley was the most-watched television show in America, with ratings that surpassed those of Happy Days.

Both shows were produced at Paramount Television—Happy Days on Stage 19 and Laverne & Shirley on Stage 20. Garry Marshall (brother of star Penny Marshall) was the creator of both shows.

The characters Laverne and Shirley were introduced to viewers as friends of “The Fonz,” Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli. This of course was the very popular character played by Henry Winkler on Happy Days. Not surprisingly, characters from Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley made occasional guest appearances on each other’s shows.

The theme song from the series, Making Our Dreams Come True, was released as a single and became a top 30 hit in 1976.

The writers are the stars of every really successful sitcom. We couldn’t do it without the writers.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Starring Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Richards

The Mary Tyler Moore Show is television situation comedy created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns. The program aired on CBS from September 19, 1970 to March 19, 1977. Most of the action takes place in the WJM-TV Minneapolis news room, where Mary Richards works as an ambitious associate producer.

Mary Tyler Moore’s character was initially intended to be a divorcée. However, the network was afraid viewers might think Mary had divorced Rob Petrie, her TV husband during the time she portrayed Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Breaking tradition, the sitcom focused on a never-married, independent career woman as the central character. Indeed, Mary Richards as well as the show’s theme song inspired many single women to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. You’re gonna make it, after all!

The Mary Tyler Moore Show earned 29 Emmy Awards and set a new record that was not broken until 2002, when Frasier earned its 30th. The show received awards for Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row between 1975 and 1977.

Your Dreams Were Your Ticket Out

Who’d have thought they’d lead ya – Back here where we need ya

When composer John Sebastian had problems rhyming lyrics for a show called Kotter, he decided to tell a story instead. Since the teacher, played by Gabe Kaplan, was returning to his alma mater, the lyrics set the tone for the show, welcoming Mr. Kotter back to James Buchanan High School.

The producers liked the song so much that they decided to change the title of the show to Welcome Back, Kotter. The song subsequently hit number one on the charts.

The show was a big hit, at least for the first three seasons. By the fourth year, Gabe Kaplan had left over creative differences with the producers. John Travolta, the show’s breakout star, had soared to new heights with Saturday Night Fever, and appeared only occasionally as a special guest star.

I had done 25 motion pictures prior to The Partridge Family and nobody knew my name.

We’ll Make You Happy!

A Whole Lot of Lovin’ is What We’ll be Bringin’

As one of television’s most popular moms, actress Shirley Jones would occasionally find runaway kids camping out on her Beverly Hills lawn, anxious to join the fictional Partridge family. Danny Bonaduce, who played wise-cracking sibling Danny Partridge, often stayed with his television mom and her family when tensions ran high in his own home.

Viewers embraced the singing family, travelin’ along in their psychedelic schoolbus. It didn’t matter that most of the actors were merely going through the motions. According to Shirley Jones, actors Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, Suzanne Crough, Jeremy Gelbwaks and Brian Forster were given the chance to enter a recording studio and perform for themselves, but they weren’t able to pull it off. Only she and her real-life stepson David Cassidy could actually sing and play, the latter ascending to teen idol super-stardom due to the show’s incredible popularity.

That’s Me and You

Love, American Style was produced by Paramount Television and originally aired between September 1969 and January 1974.

Each week the one-hour comedy presented unrelated stories of romance, featuring different characters and locations. The show’s stable of regular players was supplemented by guest appearances from other popular actors of the time. One common element was a large and ornate brass bed, which served as a prop in many of the episodes.

The show had a hip music score, provided by Charles Fox who co-wrote the show’s theme song with Arnold Margolin. Popular character actor Stuart Margolin (brother of Arnold) was a regular on the show, appearing in 29 episodes.

Famed executive producer Garry Marshall often remarked that Love, American Style was where failed sitcom pilots went to die. If a producer couldn’t find a network interested in his pilot, he’d sell the script to Aaron Spelling who would extract the funniest bits to use on Love, American Style.

Meet The Flintstones

They’re the Modern Stone Age Family

Based on the cast of The Honeymooners, the Flintstones and Rubbles were the first cartoon characters created specifically for primetime audiences. Though it was broadcast in black-and-white for the first two seasons, The Flintstones had the distinction of being ABC’s first series televised in color.

It was also the first animated series in which a lead character became pregnant. There were many storylines covering Wilma’s pregnancy and Fred’s adjustment to being a father. Audiences welcomed Pebbles on February 22, 10,000 B.C. at 8pm. She weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces.

The Flintstones was the most financially successful animated series for more than three decades. The Modern Stone Age classic was ultimately unseated by another wildly popular cartoon family, The Simpsons.

Just a Few Fun Facts About The Flintstones

In the opening credits from the first season, a sign indicates that the population of Bedrock is 2,500.

Fred’s four dino-cranes at the quarry were named Mildred, Lulu Belle, Rocky, and Hugo.

The Flintstone’s first child was supposed to be a boy, but a Hanna-Barbera marketing department executive convinced them to change it to a girl. Why? Because girl dolls were a bigger seller than boy dolls.

Casper, the Friendly Ghost

Created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo

Casper, the Friendly Ghost was created in the late 1930s by Seymour Reit who created the concept, and Joe Oriolo who crafted the illustrations. The partners had initially planned to write a storybook, but by 1939 had failed to find a publisher interested in the idea.

In the early 1940s, while Seymour Reit was away on military service, Joe Oriolo sold the book rights to Paramount Pictures’ Famous Studios animation division. The Friendly Ghost, the first Noveltoon to feature Casper, was released by Paramount in 1945.

Two additional cartoons were created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, There’s Good Boos To-Night and A Haunting We Will Go. Paramount launched Casper, the Friendly Ghost as a series in 1950. Casper went on to become one of the most beloved and lucrative characters from Famous Studios.

Composer Earle Hagen

The Andy Griffith Show Theme Song Composer

The legendary Earle Hagen composed music for over 3,000 television series episodes during his long career, and will surely be remembered for the theme from The Andy Griffith Show. The theme song, called “The Fishin’ Hole,” is unquestionably one of the most recognizable tunes of all time.

Until Earle Hagen’s passing in 2008, very few fans of The Andy Griffith Show realized it was the composer himself who whistled the famous tune at the top of each episode. It wasn’t planned that way. As a composer, Earle Hagen was a master at capturing the tone of each show he worked on. However, creating a theme song for The Andy Griffith Show proved somewhat challenging. The composer ultimately decided to create something simple, something that could be whistled.

A demo of the show’s opening theme was recorded, with Earle Hagen whistling the tune and his 11-year-old son Deane snapping his fingers. The idea was presented to the show’s executive producer, Sheldon Leonard, the following morning. The concept was a winner! Sheldon Leonard loved the theme and suggested the now famous (and much parodied) opening sequence where Andy and Opie Taylor walk along a country road with their fishing poles.

Earle Hagen
While sitting at home wracking my brain for an idea for a theme for the Griffith show, it finally occurred to me that it should be something simple, something you could whistle. With that in mind, it took me about an hour to write the Andy Griffith theme.

The Andy Griffith Show Theme Song Composer

Earle Hagen jokingly referred to himself as “a famous composer nobody ever heard of,” but that was hardly the case. Television production superstars Danny Thomas and Sheldon Leonard depended on Earle Hagen to create original and distinctive music for their shows. At one point in his busy career, Earle Hagen worked on as many as six different television shows at one time.

Though perhaps best known for The Andy Griffith Show, Earle Hagen wrote memorable opening themes for a number of other television shows, including The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Spy, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., The Mod Squad, That Girl, and Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer. He scored dozens of television shows, including Make Room for Daddy, The Mod Squad, Eight Is Enough and The Dukes of Hazzard.

At his peak, Earle Hagen was known to work 16-hour shifts, seven days a week, for 40 weeks a year. The prolific composer received three Emmy Award nominations for outstanding achievement in musical composition for I Spy, and won the award in 1968.

Earle Hagen
It was hard work, with long hours and endless deadlines, but being able to write something one day and hear it a few days later appealed to me.

Ranked by TV Guide as the Ninth-Best Show in Television History

The Andy Griffith Show aired on CBS for eight seasons from October 3, 1960 through April 1, 1968. The first five seasons (159 episodes) were shot in black and white, and the final three seasons (90 episodes) were shot in color. Andy Griffith appeared in all 249 of these episodes.

The popular series never placed lower than seventh in the Nielsen ratings and was ranked number one during its final season in 1968. The show was a spin-off from an episode of The Danny Thomas Show and spawned a spin-off series, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. in 1964, as well as a sequel series, Mayberry R.F.D. in 1968. There was also a reunion movie, Return to Mayberry in 1986. Reruns of The Andy Griffith Show currently air throughout the United States, and the complete series is available on DVD.
