Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)

Johann Sebastian Bach
It’s easy to play any musical instrument. All you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.

Bassist and Composer Edgar Meyer

Seven-time Grammy Award winner Edgar Meyer appeared in Bach & Friends, a two-hour documentary produced by Michael Lawrence. The film includes interviews with several fine musicians who share stories about Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to classical music, Edgar Meyer’s styles include bluegrass, newgrass, and jazz.

Edgar Meyer
From the first moment that I can remember, I had identified myself as a bass player and it had everything to do with my father, who was a bass player. And he loved music, you know, as much as anybody I’ve ever seen. And that dynamic I just thought as somehow was a straight pass to me.

Upright Bass Facts

The upright bass, or double bass, is the largest and lowest-pitched string instrument. It can be played played with a bow (arco) or by plucking the strings (pizzicato). Classical music calls for the natural sound produced acoustically by the instrument. In other genres such as jazz and blues, the bass sound is usually amplified. Bass amplifiers have equalization controls that allow a player to boost low frequencies. Amplification gives a bassist more control over the tone of the instrument.

Among classical performers the instrument is called a contrabass, from its Italian name contrabbasso. Other common names are string bass, to distinguish it from a brass bass instrument, or simply bass. In jazz and other non-classical music genres, the instrument is called an upright bass or acoustic bass to differentiate it from the electric bass guitar. In folk and bluegrass music, it’s referred to by many names, including bass fiddle, bass violin, doghouse bass, and bull fiddle.

Rockabilly’s Slap Bass

Bass Guitar Facts

The bass guitar often serves as the rhythmic and harmonic foundation of a song, bridging the melody and the beat. It drives the groove in many styles of music, including blues, country, funk, fusion, gospel, jazz, Latin, metal, pop, punk rock, and reggae. This popular string instrument is known by many names including bass, electric bass, and electric bass guitar.

While the standard bass guitar has four strings tuned to E, A, D, and G, extended-range basses can have five, six, or even more strings, allowing for a broader range of notes and techniques. Some bass guitars are fretless, allowing for smoother slides and microtonal notes, similar to a double bass. Despite having the shortest strings of stringed instruments in a typical band setup, the bass produces the lowest frequencies, thanks to its thick strings and longer scale length.

More Bass Guitar Facts

A person who performs on this string instrument is called a bassist. Notable bassists include Sheryl Crow, Flea, Maurice Gibb (Bee Gees), Larry Graham, Sammy Hagar, Carol Kaye, Geddy Lee, Julian Lennon, Paul McCartney (The Beatles, Wings), Jaco Pastorius, John Patitucci (Chick Corea), Prince, Kenny Rogers, Gene Simmons (Kiss), Esperanza Spalding, Peter Tork (The Monkees), Eddie Van Halen, Wolfgang Van Halen, Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols), and Stevie Wonder.

Played with Fingers, Picks, or Both
Bassists use various techniques—fingers for a warm tone, picks for precision and attack, or even tapping and harmonics for experimental sounds. Pioneered by players like Larry Graham in the 1960s, the slap-and-pop technique (slapping the strings with the thumb and popping them with the fingers) became a hallmark of funk music, adding percussive flair.
