“Dueling Banjos” was used without permission in the 1972 film Deliverance, and became a surprise hit. The song’s composer, Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith sued, and eventually received songwriting credit and royalties.

For some people the word “banjo” conjures up memories of the Deliverance banjo player, actor Billy Redden. Musician Mike Addis played the banjo for the scene—his left hand hidden within Redden’s sleeve. Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell recorded “Dueling Banjos” which was then used in the film. This is the earliest known video of music legends Glen Campbell and Carl Jackson performing the song in April 1973.
