Sergio Mendes

Sergio Mendes is the most internationally recognized Brazilian artist of all time. Working tirelessly as a keyboardist, vocalist, composer, and producer, the talented musician rose in popularity during the sixties Bossa Nova era. His phenomenal success has endured for more than five decades, including performances for Kings and heads of state all over the world.

With more than 55 releases to his credit, Sergio Mendes has performed non-stop since his career was launched in 1961. He continues to create a unique blend of Bossa Nova, jazz, and funk, often collaborating and sharing the spotlight with other musical artists.

Getz/Gilberto (1963)
The first Bossa Nova single to achieve international popularity was perhaps the most successful of all time, ‘The Girl From Ipanema.’ The resulting fad was not unlike the disco craze of the 1970s.

Sergio Mendes

A professional pianist since the age of sixteen, Sergio Mendes is one of the most gifted musical talents to emerge from Brazil. His group performed at parties and night clubs near the Brazilian town of Ipanema, where famed composer and musician, Antonio Carlos Jobim, heard Sergio play.

With encouragement from Jobim, Sergio Mendes joined other musicians in Rio who were creating a new musical style that came to be known as Bossa Nova. Sergio Mendes has released over four dozen albums with his signature combination of Bossa Nova, jazz, and funk.

Sergio Mendes on Antonio Carlos Jobim
I’m nervous of the word genius, but it wasn’t with him a case of a few good songs–he wrote hundreds. He could make you cry when he played you a new song–he seduced you.
