The Patty Duke Show Theme Song aka Cousins (Excerpt)
Meet Cathy, who’s lived most everywhere
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square
But Patty’s only seen the sights
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights
What a crazy pair! …

Patty Duke Recognition
Over the course of her six-decade acting career, Patty Duke was the recipient of an Academy Award (at age 16), two Golden Globe Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Patty Duke Show

A Hotdog Makes Her Lose Control

The Patty Duke Show aired on ABC from September 18, 1963 through May 4, 1966, with reruns airing during the summer of 1966. Most of the show’s 104 episodes were written by Sidney Sheldon, the Academy Award-winning writer who was also responsible for creating I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970).

As you can probably guess by its title, The Patty Duke Show was created as a vehicle for the 16-year old actress, then a rising star. She had recently won an Academy Award for The Miracle Worker in which she portrayed a young Helen Keller.

In the sitcom Patty Duke played a dual role—Patty Lane, a normal teenager living in the Brooklyn Heights section of New York City, and Cathy Lane, her soft-spoken and worldly identical cousin who lives with the Lane family while her foreign correspondent father is on assignment.

William Schallert (About Patty Duke)
When I think of her, she’s family as far as I’m concerned. We had a very close relationship. Whenever I saw her it was like greeting one of my kids. She just had a wonderful quality and I got to know her over the years and she was admirable in a lot of ways.

Double Duty

The Patty Duke Show

Patty Duke’s dual role posed several technical challenges. Television special effects were rare in the early 1960s, particularly for a sitcom. The actress appeared as both characters in the same frame through use of a split screen effect. Another actress was used as her double, and was almost always seen from behind. William Schallert played Cathy’s father in several episodes, employing the same techniques.

Actors take risks all the time. We put ourselves on the line. It is creative to be able to interpret someone’s words and breathe life into them.
