Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is a holiday novelty song that holds the distinction of being the only song that was voted “most liked” as well as “most disliked” in a 2007 radio listener poll.

The Christmas favorite was released in 1979 by Elmo Shropshire and his wife Patsy, under their own record label, “Elmo ‘n’ Patsy.” In 1984, CBS Records signed Elmo and Patsy to Epic Records. By the end of the year, 150,000 singles and 90,000 albums were sold. After the couple divorced, Elmo re-recorded the song on his own in 1992 and again in 2000. Many versions of the song are still available.

Elmo Schropshire, also known by his stage name, Dr. Elmo, really is a doctor. He holds a degree in veterinary medicine from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Elmo invested $40,000 of his own money to produce the original Grandma album and music video. In return, he’s become a millionaire five times over!
