George Harrison Songs List

George Harrison,
The Enigmatic Beatle

On this page you will find a George Harrison songs list, with the Beatles and solo. I’ve also included albums, posters, and some of his life story.

George Harrison was one of the original Beatles, and has often been called, “The Quiet Beatle.” He was more quiet than the others, and seemingly more interested in spirituality than the others. For sure his musical tastes ran differently, into Indian music and sitars.

After the Beatles broke up he took the longest to make an album on his own, but it was a masterpiece, just as you would expect, “All Things Must Pass”. Ironically, it is the most successful of all the albums ever done by an ex-Beatle!

He collaborated with many musicians, notably Ravi Shankar, the master sitarist from India. He and Ravi were so upset by the poverty in Bangladesh that they organized a concert 1971 in Madison Square Garden with all proceeds going to benefit the Bangladesh orphans.

Later he performed with the Traveling Wilburys along with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. He also performed often with Eric Clapton who was his best friend. Those who knew him always said he was gentle and agreeable, “a musician’s musician.”

Like all the other Beatles, George Harrison was Knighted by Her Majesty the Queen of England. He had many Grammy Awards and is listed as the 21st Best Guitarist of All Time according to Rolling Stone magazine. Besides his many musical awards, he got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009. So George was quieter and shunned the limelight, and he leaves an enigmatic legacy, but he was a genius like the other Beatles!

I Need You
The First George Harrison Song

This was the first song George wrote for the Beatles and it has a unique chord structure. I just loved the song, and immediately looked up the record to see who wrote it. Surprise, it wasn’t Paul! So there was our first clue that George had lyrical ability too.

“On Rubber Soul” he had a song, “If I Needed Someone” which explored the same type of chord structure in a more fully realized form, and it was a beautiful song too. He was showing his ability, but my God, it was Paul McCartney and John Lennon he was competing with! Hard to get a toehold, you know? One of my favorite songs by him and it definitely belongs on a list of the best George Harrison songs.

Here Comes the Sun
George Harrison’s Hit From Abbey Road

As a lifelong sun worshiper, I love this song! It’s also a lovely metaphor for a relationship, don’t you think? One of George’s early songs and always at the top of any George Harrison songs list as a masterpiece.

Abbey Road – Beatles songs, Without a doubt, my favorite Beatles’ album of all time, and both “Here Comes the Sun”, and “Something” are on it!

Excerpt from Amazon: The Beatles’ last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side’s writing, John Lennon’s hard-rocking, “Come Together” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” make the strongest impression.

My Sweet Lord
George Harrison Songs List

My Sweet Lord is one of my favorites of George’s songs. I don’t believe for one second that he ripped it off, even though he lost his lawsuit. He could write amazing lyrics and music so why would he copy? Plus it‘s a worship song. How anyone could think he would steal a worship song strains imagination. As a lifelong meditator, I really love the Buddhist chants later on in the song.

Ironically, and this is not very well known, the judge in the case suggested an elegant solution. He also did not believe George ripped it off, but said it was probably subliminally noticed, and thus influenced his song. His solution was to have George buy the company that owned the rights to “He’s So Fine” and therefore he would not be infringing as he would now own the rights to the original song. So the other company got paid off, which is why they brought suit in the first place, and George owned both songs. End of problem. Except as an artist who had done no wrong, it had to burn a little to have that judgement recorded. Still, against all his millions, a judgement and payoff of $700,000 and change was better than it could have been, by far.

Here is George’s masterpiece!

All Things Must Pass
Lots of George Harrison Best Songs

All Things Must PassGeorge Harrison Songs List

George’s epic Masterpiece album, with lots of genius music. My Sweet Lord is on this one! George had lots of songs backlogged because since Paul and John were so prolific, and he was younger, they didn’t give him much play, so to speak. So he just kept them and put them all on “All Things Must Pass.” That’s why it’s a triple album!

Excerpt from Amazon: No amount of grumpy auto-revisionism can subtract from the admittedly overwrought majesty of these tracks, which were the logical sonic extension of Abbey Road. It remains Harrison’s unequaled masterpiece. The devolved “My Sweet Lord” aside, the bonus tracks here offer new insight: the unreleased “I Live for You” further highlights the album’s oft overlooked country facet; spare takes of “Beware of Darkness” and “Let It Down” underscore the strength of Harrison’s songwriting; an alternate backing track of “What Is Life” demonstrates the meticulousness of Spector’s production. And then there’s the project’s truly stellar session lineup, which included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman, Jim Gordon, Dave Mason, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ginger Baker, Carl Radle, Gary Brooker, Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Pete Drake and, it turns out, even Phil Collins!

All of George’s best songs are on this album!

Excerpt from Amazon: As the Beatles’ perpetual dark horse, Harrison rarely got the chance to write and sing more than one or two songs per album. But once the band split up, the former “quiet one” was quick out of the gate with a series of memorable hit singles that seamlessly merged his budding spirituality and an epic, Phil Spector-inspired pop sensibility. This collection, originally released in 1976, combines seven of Harrison’s best-known Beatles numbers, including “Something,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with a half-dozen early solo hits including “My Sweet Lord,” “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth),” “You,” and “What Is Life.”

The Concert For Bangladesh [2 CD]list of george harrison songs

On the first of August, 1971, George and Ravi Shankar jointly performed at the Concert for Bangladesh to raise money to help refugees there.
They were joined by Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Ringo Star, Badfinger, and Billy Preston. I have a friend who went to the concert. He said George and Ravi jammed for hours and it was highly mystical.
