Seven Stranded Castaways
The Original Survivors
They’re the most famous survivors of all time … Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the Professor and Mary Ann. A now legendary and much-parodied three-hour-tour left our favorite castaways shipwrecked on an uncharted desert isle for three television seasons from 1964 to 1967. Despite their deserted status, a revolving door of guest stars kept the erstwhile S.S. Minnow passengers and crew occupied with a variety of entertaining situations each week.
When the show’s creator, Sherwood Schwartz, originally pitched the show to the networks he envisioned a drama, rather than a comedy. He wanted the castaways to represent a microcosm of society, working together to survive. Viewers embraced the seven stranded castaways. Gilligan’s Island ran for 98 episodes–the first 36 episodes were filmed in black and white, though they were later colorized for syndication. The show’s second and third seasons, as well as all three TV movie sequels were filmed in color.
The show enjoyed high ratings during its original run, and grew in popularity over decades of syndication. The show often ran in the late afternoon and was a hit with school kids. Decades later, Gilligan is celebrated as an American pop cultural icon.

I must say, ‘The Skipper’ has become my alter ego. I’m one in the same now.
