Starring Don Porter as UCLA Professor Russ Lawrence
Gidget is a 1965 sitcom about a surfing, boy-crazy teenager nicknamed “Gidget,” portrayed by Sally Field. Gidget lives in Los Angeles with her widowed father Professor Russ Lawrence, played by Don Porter.
Gidget was filmed at the Columbia/Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California. The series aired on ABC from September 15, 1965 through April 21, 1966, but was cancelled at the end of its first season.
Reruns during the summer of 1966 revived the show’s popularity, but ABC executives opted to star Sally Field in The Flying Nun in the fall of 1967. The actress later confided that she loved working on Gidget, and despised The Flying Nun.
The Gidget theme song lyrics were written by Howard Greenfield, with music by Jack Keller. The song was sung in the pilot by The Four Freshmen and in the series by Johnny Tillotson.

There was really a snobbery from people in film. They did not want people who had come from television. It was the poor relation of show business, and especially situation comedy.
