Violinist Joe Venuti – Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame

Violinist Joe Venuti

Violinist Joe Venuti

(1902-1978)

Like many early jazz greats, violinist Joe Venuti was classically trained, but his brilliant timing and ability to perform electrifying violin solos set him apart from the crowd. On top of being naturally gifted, he devised a technique that allowed him to play four-note chords.

Joe Venuti’s impressive musical abilities placed him in high demand in New York City, where he often worked with childhood friend and guitar virtuoso, Eddie Lang. Together they astounded musicians and fans by blazing the trail for how jazz was to be played on their respective instruments. Joe Venuti performed brilliantly for more than fifty years, and remained active until his death in 1978.

Guitarist Eddie Lang – Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame

Guitarist Eddie Lang

Guitarist Eddie Lang

(1902-1933)

Guitarist Eddie Lang introduced the popular string instrument to a wider audience and forever changed the way that people listened to music. His versatility and musical talent made it possible for the humble guitar to rise to an elevated status in the jazz, blues, and classical genres. His career included collaborations with with such renowned artists as Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael, Bix Biederbecke, Benny Goodman, King Oliver, Bessie Smith, and Paul Whiteman.

He also played under the name “Blind Willie Dunn” on a number of blues records with Alonzo “Lonnie” Johnson, an African-American blues and jazz singer, guitarist, violinist, and songwriter. Eddie Lang showed no tolerance for racism and appeared on more recording sessions with black musicians than any other white musician of his time.

The jazz guitar virtuoso became friends with legendary singer Bing Crosby and often served as his accompanist. Eddie Lang’s most famous association was with childhood friend and violinist Joe Venuti, with whom he recorded many titles.

Eddie Lang’s career was cut short in 1933 when complications arose after what was supposed to be a routine tonsillectomy. He was only 30 when he died.

The Moody Blues Question

The Moody Blues Question
The Moody Blues Question Authority

Moody Blues Question

The Moody Blues are a Rock band from England who are still rocking after all these years. In 1970 Beatlemania was still a worldwide phenomenon but the Moody Blues came along with a different music and a sound which really spoke to me. The Vietnam War was starting to become very unpopular and the song “Question” said some of the things that people were starting to talk about openly. It was one of several songs that became anti-war anthems of the era. But for me the song always meant way more than that.

I was raised by two Army parents who were in the system and mostly just did whatever the powers that be told them. The Army, the government, doctors, bosses, teachers, priests, whoever. Unless something or someone threatened their children, they did as told or expected. I should have turned out just like them, right? But I didn’t.

My parents gave me permission to read anything I wanted, and I devoured books, and ideas. And like Robert Frost, I took the less travelled path. I still question authority today. And I still think about the first time I heard The Moody Blues singing “Question” while I drove up Texas Street in San Diego, with speakers blaring. They inspired me to create shirts and merchandise with a slogan of that era, “Question Authority,” which I am featuring here.

So turn up the speakers and enjoy a Rock and Roll classic while shopping.

I hope you enjoy the music and the merchandise!

Listen to the Moody Blues Sing Question!
~ Music Video of The Original Version of Question

Just want to play the song over and over? Here it is in all its glory…

The Moody Blues “Question” Lyrics

The Lyrics are Still Very Timely Today,
Don’t You Think?

Why do we never get an answer
When we’re knocking at the door
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war?
‘Cause when we stop and look around us,
There is nothing that we need,
In a world of persecution
That is burning in its greed.

Why do we never get an answer
When we’re knocking at the door
Because the truth is hard to swallow
That’s what the war of love is for.

It’s not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It’s more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be.

And when you stop and think about it
You won’t believe it’s true
That all the love you’ve been giving
Has all been meant for you.

I’m looking for someone to change my life,
I’m looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it’s done to me,
To lose the love I knew
Could safely lead me through.

Between the silence of the mountains,
And the crashing of the sea,
There lies a land I once lived in,
And she’s waiting there for me,
But in the grey of the morning,
My mind becomes confused,
Between the dead and the sleeping,
And the road that I must choose.

I’m looking for someone to change my life,
I’m looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it’s done to me,
To lose the love I knew,
Could safely lead me to
The land that I once knew,
To learn as we grow old
The secrets of our soul.

It’s not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It’s more the way you really mean it
When you tell me what will be.

Why do we never get an answer
When we’re knocking at the door
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war?
‘Cause when we stop and look around us,
There is nothing that we need,
In a world of persecution
That is burning in its greed.

Lovely to See You
Moody Blues Concert on Blu-ray

Not surprisingly, I have been to 5 Moody Blues’ concerts in my life. They often start their shows with this song. I saw them a few years ago in California at the Hollywood Bowl and they still sounded great!

I love every album they have ever produced and I have most, if not all of them. So I would have a hard time picking just one as my favorite, but if pressed, this would be the one. A masterpiece, truly!

or “I’m Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band?”

Do You Question Authority?

“Question” is without a doubt a song that started my questioning the status quo and things that others take for granted. It’s 45 years later and I still question authority. I think everyone should. Where does your authority to do that come from? Why should I listen to you? What is your agenda? What are you selling? Who paid for the research? Who benefits? Who profits? All good questions. Never stop asking. And never stop questioning.

Stevie Nicks, of Fleetwood Mac, and Solo

Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac

old stevie nicks fleetwood macLove Peace Doves & Music Yellow Rose Posterold stevie nicks fleetwood mac

Stevie Nicks is probably the best known member of the world famous band, Fleetwood Mac. Of course she has a solo career all her own but like several members of the band, has continued to perform and make recordings with them. So her story and the Fleetwood Mac story are very intertwined.

Fleetwood Mac are a unique band, with a beautiful sound, and a unique way of creating that famous sound. All of its musicians are multi talented : they all sing, write songs, and play instruments. To me, the band is much more than the sum of its parts, but even so, Stevie stands out! Yes, she is beautiful, and yes, she has a very strong and unusual sounding voice, but it’s her lyrics and her spirit that help her soar in the musical realm… and which set her apart from all other rock singers. Her songs are poetry set to music!

Stevie has a way with words in interviews too, so I have included some of her quotes.

The Landslide Phenomenon
Stevie Nicks’ Most Famous Song

It was 1977, in many ways a very pivotal year for me. Elvis died. My sister Penny died. My daughter was born. And I heard Landslide for the first time.

The death of my sister caused a huge personal spiritual crisis for me. I just could not believe that God would take the sweetest person on Earth from me and my family. So Landslide was a song that I associated with this crisis. The Landslide brought me down, and it took a long while for me to climb back up.

But Landslide also marked the beginning of my love affair with Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. One of my 4 favorite bands of all time. (The others are the Beatles, the Moody Blues, and Coldplay.)

Of course I own this album in several versions, casette, vinyl, CD! But then, I own every single album she ever made, including the obscure Buckingham-Nicks which is a bit of a collector’s item now. Wild Heart is an apt description of her I think.  Features my favorite song of hers ever: Stand Back. Also Enchanted, Night Bird, and If Anyone Falls, among other gems.

Or Simply, The Mac

By the time Fleetwood Mac did Tusk, they were a worldwide phenomenon, and were often called by music aficionados simply, The Mac. By this time they were a music machine, with song after song on the top of the music charts. The video of them marching with the UCLA band was a tribal event for Mac lovers.

Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac Came to Memphis in 1983
Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac

In 1983 I was living in Bartlett Tennessee, which is a little city outside of Memphis, a suburb really. I remember hearing on the radio that Fleetwood Mac was coming to town, and I could not wait to call Ticketmaster to get our tickets. I got them on the 14th row. A little to the left side so that meant I was on the side Stevie sang from. As it turned out the way the seats are placed in the stadium means that the 14th row is just about stage level, so the singers are right in front of you! I could not believe my good luck and very soon after the band came out and started singing Landslide. I watched Stevie’s every move of course, and in one instant where she was scanning the crowd, we locked eyes. For a few seconds time stood still for me, and then she winked! Talk about excited! I don’t think I came down off my cloud for a week!

Umm, yeah, I have this one too! It’s probably the least like any of her other albums, as she was in a very dark time in her life. Whacked out on drugs and alcohol and not doing well personally, she is very raw on this album. But I still love it, as her lyrics are truthful and poignant, and her voice is dark and mysterious as always.  It has rave reviews, and not so rave reviews from people who want the same thing over and over from their musical icons. I prefer truth and variety, so I love it!

Stand Back
My Favorite Song by Stevie Nicks

The soundtrack of my life story would have huge amounts of time dedicated to Stevie Nicks. My journey to autonomy runs straight along the course of her journey in songs. Stand Back represents the time when I was awakening to the notion that I was more than a wife and mother, and deserved more space in a marriage that wasn’t working. The song just seemed to give me a power to move to a different place inside.

Peter Frampton and Mick Fleetwood joined her on stage for a few renditions of their old hit songs.

Stevie Nicks, Lyricist Extraordinaire
And Genius Musician Too!

Stevie has a very unique way with words and most of her songs can be written out and read like poems. She has one of the most unique musical signatures in all of rock. No other single artist moves around scales, time structures, song structures, and harmonies all in a single song the way she does. Many of the songs really should not work, but of course, they work like magic.

Stevie Nicks is not only an accomplished musician, she has always been a strong fashion influence for thousands of females. Her stage outfits are kind of Bohemian meets Welsh Witch meets Hippie meets Gypsy and are a huge part of a Stevie Nicks concert performance. I love her way of dressing and it is the way I have always dressed myself. I agree with her that mystery is better than overt sexuality. At any rate, she always looks beautiful!

“I think they all went too far.
Their jeans got too low, their tops got too see-through.
Personally, I think that sexy is keeping yourself mysterious.
I’m really an old-fashioned girl,
and I think I’m totally sexy.”

Memories of Elvis

Elvis Presley Poster Print, 24×36 Poster Print, 24×36Most Popular Elvis Presley Songs

How can anyone decide on the most popular Elvis Presley songs? It totally depends on the type of music you like because he sang songs in many genres. And what can I say about the Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll that hasn’t been said? Growing up he was the only singer that my parents ever let us listen to. My mother loved classical music, and Dad played the violin, so mostly we only heard classical music at our house. Mom and Dad made an exception for Elvis though.

For two reasons: One, he was an amazing singer….who sang the best songs ever, and two, he was our cousin. Yes, our cousin! On my father’s side. We always knew it growing up, and as I said, we were allowed to hear only Elvis sing because of it. My grand aunt and her husband even took care of Elvis’s paternal grandparents in Tupelo (Minnie Mae Hood and her husband Jesse) when they were sick. I have the whole genealogy chart in my computer, as one of my other cousins researches all that stuff and sent it to me…, but in a nutshell here is how it goes. My grandmother was born in Tupelo and it was her sister (My grand aunt Ollie) and her husband who took care of Elvis’s grandparents, and my grandmother and all her sisters were Elvis’ grand aunts too. Elvis and my father shared great great grandparents! So yes, Elvis and Lisa Marie are my distant cousins.

My cousin sent this to me in a letter:
“I will fill in dates, etc later. Aunt Ollie told me many times she took care of Elvis’s grandparents in Itawamba County when they had “the fever.” This would have been Minnie Mae and Jesse D. Presley. Remember she was married to a Hood in her first marriage.”

But even if that were not true, Elvis had the most amazing voice, and he sang amazing songs, and he was an amazing human being by many accounts. It can be hard to remember that with all the negative press about his addiction problems. But his generosity was legendary, as was his devotion to God and family and our country.

Elvis Sang Lots of Gospel Music

Not everyone knows, but Elvis was a devoted Christian and after almost all concerts, he and his band sat around and played Gospel music. He and his band prayed before and after concerts.

I Remember the Day Elvis Died
About Elvis Presley (Bio)

I will always associate Elvis’ death with the death of my sister Penny. She was in an advanced stage of cancer and my parents had written to Elvis about Penny meeting him back stage at a performance. Penny loved Elvis the way die hard groupie fans do. My parents wanted to give that to her before she passed on. But it wasn’t to be, and when Penny found out that Elvis had died, she went into a depression and never came out of it. She died a month and a week later herself. Penny was the sweetest sister in the world. At that time, I had spent most of my life sharing a room with her and was lost when she died. For years I could not listen to Elvis without bursting into tears as his voice reminded me of her.

And the day he died was like a light going out in the world. That voice gone! It was a huge loss. I think a lot of people cried that day.

When I heard the news of his passing, this is the song I listened to first.

One of the Worst Days of My Life

He wasn’t just the most famous singer in history, he was my cousin! It hurt us all deeply.

I guess it’s normal to be a little starstruck when you find out one of your friends is closely related to a celebrity and my whole life i have amazed my friends when they found out about my Elvis connection. But to us he was family which is even more important.

My 2 sons and my brother are all extremely musical and proud of our Elvis connection too, so when I found an old stack of 45 records when cleaning out the garage, and realized it had at least 25 vintage rare Elvis recordings, I wondered if I should sell them for the thousands of dollars I could get. But the minute I mentioned this to my sons they stopped me immediately. No no no, they said. Are you kidding? Sell Elvis records??? He’s our cousin, we can’t sell them.

I Got To Touch Elvis’ Grave at Graceland
Elvis Aaron Presley Biography

On the 5th Anniversary of his death I was living in Bartlett, Tennessee, which is on the edge of Memphis where Elvis’ home Graceland is. Like many fans I had wanted to visit Elvis’ home, and that seemed like a good time to do so. But when I got there the line of cars stretched for blocks and the sidewalks were crowded with fans there mourning his death.

I went back a week later and got to walk the grounds, see the inside of the house, visit the garage with all those cars still there, and visit the grave of Elvis and his mother. As a relative I got to stay and sit in the little garden by the grave. I could not resist touching it while crying a few tears that he was gone too soon and that Penny never got to meet him… I had hoped to get to meet him while he was still alive too.

Elvis Presley’s Epitaph
As Written on His Gravestone

Following is the wording of Elvis’ epitaph as seen on his tombstone, written by Janelle McComb, commissioned and directed by Elvis’ father Vernon Presley:

Elvis
Aaron
Presley

January 8, 1935
August 16, 1977

Son of
Vernon Elvis Presley
and Gladys Love Presley

Father of
Lisa Marie Presley

He was a precious gift from God
We cherished and loved dearly.

He had a God-given talent that he shared
With the world. And without a doubt,
He became most widely acclaimed;
Capturing the hearts of young and old alike.

He was admired not only as an entertainer,
But as the great humanitarian that he was;
For his generosity, and his kind feelings
For his fellow man.

He revolutionized the field of music and
Received its highest awards.

He became a living legend in his own time;
Earning the respect and love of millions.

God saw that he needed some rest and
Called him home to be with Him.

We miss you, Son and Daddy. I thank God
That He gave us you as our son.

Elvis Visited My Church in Memphis
Elvis Presley Life Story

While in Memphis I went to the Church of Unity downtown. The minister at the time was Bernard Dosier. Very soon after I started going there he told a story about Elvis. It seems Elvis was known for visiting different churches in Memphis. He loved God, Jesus, and Gospel music. Elvis was also known for his amazing generosity. So on this day, a lady there was talking about her need for a new car so that she could visit her husband in the hospital. She mentioned that she had no idea where it would come from but that she was holding the idea of Divine Order. Elvis overheard her and told her she was getting one that day. He took her in his limo back to his personal garage and gave her a Cadillac on the spot. So Elvis had been to the church I attended. I was so sorry I missed that, and so proud of my cousin.

Elvis’ Favorite Sandwiches
Listen to Elvis Presley Songs While You Cook

Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly and Bacon
Fried Peanut Butter and Banana

Elvis loved both of these sandwiches. Here’s how you make them. These are the actual recipes my grand aunt shared with Minnie Mae Hood {Elvis’ Grandmother (Vernon’s mother) who lived with him at Graceland till she died} and our whole family has always eaten them this way too.

Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly and Bacon Sandwiches

First you fry the bread in butter on one side only. Then you put peanut butter and jelly and cooked bacon strips on a toasted side. Top with the toasted side of another slice facing in. At this point the toasted sides are inside with the peanut butter and jelly and bacon. Generously butter the outside of the sandwich on both sides and fry in a frying pan until golden brown. Yum!

Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches

Make them the same way. Start with one sided toast made by frying bread in butter, turn the toasted side in. Generously slather with peanut butter and top with bananas sliced in circles. Cover with another piece of toast (toasted side in.) Then fry in butter. We have always made these in our family too. They are really like a dessert. Sometimes I add in coconut. Double yum. What can I say, I have Southern roots. We love butter!

As if that weren’t enough decadence, we like to serve them with powdered sugar on top, with Sweet Tea. Just like Elvis.

Amazon says: Elvis trivia buffs will know immediately what the white eagle jumpsuit represents. For those who don’t, it’s what he wore during the “Aloha in Hawaii” concert, which is considered to be the most memorable performance of his career. This January 14, 1973, event was beamed via satellite to over a billion people worldwide. Elvis commissioned the American eagle design specifically for this show, with his intent to deliver his patriotic message worldwide. The white jumpsuit has eagle designs on the chest and sleeves and even an eagle belt buckle. Other details include flared sleeves, legs with red inset panels, a large standup collar, white boots, and a red scarf . Stick the included microphone in his hand, and you can almost hear him singing, “Hound Dog.”

Elvis Aaron Presley Biography
Elvis Presley Life Story

Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as “the King of Rock and Roll”, or simply, “the King”.
Born: January 8, 1935, Tupelo, Mississippi, United States
Died: August 16, 1977, Memphis, Tennessee, United States

He and his family moved to Memphis when he was 13 and he did his first recording when he was 21 years old there in Memphis. Two years later he began making films and two years later he was drafted. But after two years in the Army he was released and went back to making movies and recording albums that went along with the movies. During this time his good looks, and his style of music made him enormously popular all over the world. His film performances were made fun of by all the critics, but it didn’t ruin his popularity. In 1968 when he was 35 he returned to TV and live music performing and this led to a Las Vegas contract where he spent many years performing. His broadcast by satellite of his Aloha concert in Hawaii was the first globally broadcast concert in history. He won 3 Grammy awards and a lifetime Grammy. He was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and was accomplished in Blues, Gospel, and Rock Music, all three. He got involved in drugs and died too young, at 42! But he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.

All of that is the public list of facts, but there is also the man, the son, the father, the husband. Elvis loved his parents so much that he moved them into his house in Graceland, and took them to Europe with him when he was in the Army. He loved God and prayed before and after every concert. He was married only once, and stayed connected to his ex wife forever, even after they divorced. His daughter Lisa Marie has said he was an amazing father who never denied her anything and made sure she knew he loved her dearly. He was known for his endless generosity and his kindness. I think all of that is much more meaningful than his drug use could ever be.

Sir James Paul McCartney,
My Favorite Beatle

Paul Mccartney 24X36 PosterTop Paul McCartney Songs

Paul McCartney was and is my favorite Beatle. Yes, he was the cute one, wasn’t he? But it’s always been more than that for me.

In a time when rock stars were running around the planet bashing holes in hotel walls and breaking their guitars while having orgies as often as possible, Paul McCartney put his wife Linda on keyboards and his kids on the bus so they could tour with him. He wrote majestic timeless odes to his wife. And he and his family lived out of the limelight on a farm in the country. (in a 2 bedroom house for 4 children, no less) Not your average rock star is he?

Paul is somewhat of a clown, and more lighthearted than the other Beatles, more likely to make fun of a silly idea than to preach about it. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have strong convictions. He has been a champion of animal rights for many years, and a spokesperson against land mines for over a decade.

He is also the most successful pop musician in history and has been knighted by Her Majesty, The Queen of England. That is why he is now formally titled, Sir James Paul McCartney.

I first got to see him when he toured with the Beatles in 1965. I was the youngest person to win a radio contest that promised a bus ride to Houston to see the Beatles. My parents had to sign a waiver and I rode over to Houston with a bunch of teenagers and sat in the bleachers with 10,000 other fans and could not hear the music for all the screaming. I actually did not get the whole Beatle thing for a few more years. Later I got to see him perform with Wings,on the “Wings over America” tour in the 1970’s. In 1989 I got to see him twice in Berkeley, and then in the 1990’s he conducted a symphony in Orange County, California so I went to see him again. It has always been a thrill to see him, as he is an amazing performer.

This pages lists some top Paul McCartney songs, and has videos you can watch and listen to. There are albums for sale, and some fun facts about this prolific musician and performer. Enjoy!

Paul McCartney and Wings
Top Paul McCartney Songs

I saw Wings up in Denver in the 70′s when he and Linda and the band toured as Wings over America. They were awesome! I think it was 1974 but those years are a big jumbled blur as I was in college.(and it was the 70′s, so you know what that means) I loved that rather than run around having multiple girlfriends like many rock stars, Paul settled down with one wife and took her on tour so they could be together. Their love was evident on stage. It turned out to be a long and happy marriage by all accounts.

Paul and Linda lived out in the country away from the crowds, raising sheep, and housing their 4 children in a 2 bedroom house. Not exactly the rock star persona is it? And look at those kids. Mary is a potter. Heather is a writer and artist. Stella is a world renowned designer. James is a musician. Good job Paul and Linda!

Vintage McCartney Album: I have this one and it has some really wonderful sounds.
Excerpt from Amazon: Heralded as one of the most beloved solo debuts of all time, McCartney, the smash # 1 album, originally released April of 1970, yielded the timeless tracks “Every Night” and “Junk” along with the immortal classic “Maybe I’m Amazed.” McCartney II originally issued in May of 1980 was McCartney’s return to solo work after nine years touring and having released several massively successful albums with Wings. Reaching #1 in the UK, and #3 in the U.S., the album produced enduring classics such as “Coming Up,” “Waterfalls,” & “Temporary Secretary.”

Paul McCartney personally supervised all aspects of this reissue. The remastering work was done at Abbey Road using the same team who recently remastered the complete Beatles’ catalogue.

Silly Love Songs
Paul McCartney Answers John Lennon’s Taunt

During the time when Paul and John were not really being friendly, John supposedly made a little fun of the lightness of Paul’s lyrics. He himself was penning some rather philosophical and rather deep ones, as always. Apparently he referred to Paul’s songs as “those silly love songs.”

Paul’s musical responses is one of my favorites of his songs. What’s wrong with silly love songs?

Many people think Ram is a masterpiece. I do too. And some have said that this album represents the most Beatlesque of Paul’s solo albums. Maybe true. Totally love it!!! I used to play it over and over all day long while working.

Paul McCartney Concerts

In 1989 Paul and Linda again toured the United States, as simply Paul McCartney. I went to see them in Berkeley,California for 2 nights in a row on a marathon date that was magical from beginning to end. I landed in San Francisco and took the BART to Berkeley. The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) was really new and spotlessly clean, and there was a party atmosphere all the way to Berkeley on the subway. Everyone was on their way to see Paul. We sang Beatles’ songs the whole way. When I got there we walked around Berkeley and ate in little health food stores and eventually found the gates to the outdoor arena where Paul and the band were performing that night. Our tickets were on the 20th row, on the floor of the arena, just where you see the cannons go off when the opening strands of “Live and Let Die” start and simultaneously hear the booms. The cannons were really loud!

Paul and Linda outdid themselves that night. Incredible performance under the stars on a perfect summer night. I loved it so much I decided to go back the next night and see if I could buy tickets from a scalper at the gate. Sure enough, I was able to get tickets for a really low amount, something like $20 and we sat a little way up on the left side. This time when the cannons went off my ears didn’t pop from the sounds. It was another amazing performance.

During the day we walked around Berkeley and the campus of the University of California enjoying the sun and perfect weather and the very peaceful and happy crowds.

Paul’s Ode to John Lennon

Paul has said that he was very upset about John’s death despite the way the media portrayed his reaction. This song is how he answered his critics and is his ode to John.

Paul Turned Classical on Us When We Weren’t Looking!

In the 1990′s Sir Paul turned his talents to composing classical music and wrote a complete symphony called Standing Stone. (yes, I have it too)
He came to Orange County, California to conduct it at the Performing Arts Center. I got to see him down there waving his wand around at the musicians. Very different from the screaming crowds in the 60′s!

Yesterday by Paul McCartney
Top Paul McCartney Songs

Of course if we were really paying attention we would have noticed his classical leanings early on. Yesterday is simple but classic and his most successful song. It has been covered by over 2000 other artists. Paul became very wealthy from his song royalties.

Paul Is Now a Classical Ballet Composer

Marking his first foray into the word of dance, Paul has announced the general release of ‘Ocean’s Kingdom’, commissioned by the New York City Ballet. The recording will be released by Decca Records on October 3rd (UK) and Hear Music/Telarc on October 4th (US) and is conducted by John Wilson, produced by John Fraser and performed by The London Classical Orchestra.

‘Ocean’s Kingdom’ is the first time Paul has written an original orchestral score or any kind of music for dance and is the result of a collaboration between Paul and New York City Ballet’s Master in Chief Peter Martins, who have worked together to present the world premiere of a new ballet for the company’s 2011/2012 season this September.

Though the work is Paul’s first ballet, he approached the project in the same way he writes all other music, driven by his heart rather than his head and inspired by feeling rather than specific technical knowledge. While this may have been another new turn for his staggeringly varied career to take, Paul knew it had to be influenced by his own personal experience and that he needed to create a story the audience would find equally compelling and moving.

Paul’s first step was to visit the Royal Opera House to see Adolphe Adam’s ‘Giselle’, danced by the Royal Ballet. Afterwards, Paul met the dancers and discussed the work with them, realising as he did so that he was still without a central theme to his work. Keen to tell a story through his music, Paul decided to focus on the purity of the ocean and within just two months, the first draft had been completed. He then went through the music again thinking specifically of the ballet itself, thereby creating a world featuring distinctive characters and a vibrant underworld kingdom. Finally Paul spent many more weeks working alongside Peter Martins to refine the work, before Peter created the choreography with the NYCB dancers.

An hour long score featuring four stunning movements – Ocean’s Kingdom, Hall of Dance, Imprisonment and Moonrise – the ballet tells of a love story within the story of an underwater world whose people are threatened by the humans of Earth. A potently expressive and richly varied work, the score is Paul’s most challenging and emotionally complex yet. As he explains: “What was interesting was writing music that meant something expressively rather than just writing a song. Trying to write something that expressed an emotion – so you have fear, love, anger, sadness to play with and I found that exciting and challenging.”

The premiere of the ballet ‘Ocean’s Kingdom’ will take place at NYCB’s Fall Gala on Thursday 22nd September 2011 while the release of the orchestral score will follow a month later, available digitally, on CD and on vinyl. It was recorded in June in London.

The artwork that accompanies the release is equally striking and inventive. Though it seems to suggest a city skyline, it is actually a digital readout of the notes from the ballet score.

Although this is his first orchestral score for dance, Paul is already quite at home in the world of classical music. His back catalogue already carries four classical albums, the most recent of which was the Classical BRIT Award winning ‘Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart)’; a work for chorus and orchestra in four movements that was released in 2006.

Paul McCartney Song List
Paul McCartney Song Titles

I was going to list Sir Paul’s songs here, but there are 384 of them listed on Wikipedia here and he probably has a lot more that were recorded by others. For example, as a trivia fact, he wrote the song “Woman,” recorded by Peter and Gordon in 1966, but was credited under the name “Bernard Webb” instead of his own name. So rather than copy Wikipedia’s list, I decided to list my personal list of Top Paul McCartney Songs. It’s my personal list of favorites so you might not agree and lots of people have their own list, but this is mine.

Top Paul McCartney Songs, in no particular order. (I was going to do top 10 Paul McCartney songs but  had to put 15, as I couldn’t make the list any smaller. I could easily add at least 10 more!) :

George Harrison Songs List

George Harrison,
The Enigmatic Beatle

George Harrison The Beatles Iconic With Guitar 1960’s 24×36 PosterGeorge Harrison Songs List

On this page you will find a George Harrison songs list, with the Beatles and solo. I’ve also included albums, posters, and some of his life story.

George Harrison was one of the original Beatles, and has often been called, “The Quiet Beatle.” He was more quiet than the others, and seemingly more interested in spirituality than the others. For sure his musical tastes ran differently, into Indian music and sitars.

After the Beatles broke up he took the longest to make an album on his own, but it was a masterpiece, just as you would expect, “All Things Must Pass”. Ironically, it is the most successful of all the albums ever done by an ex-Beatle!

He collaborated with many musicians, notably Ravi Shankar, the master sitarist from India. He and Ravi were so upset by the poverty in Bangladesh that they organized a concert 1971 in Madison Square Garden with all proceeds going to benefit the Bangladesh orphans.

Later he performed with the Traveling Wilburys along with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. He also performed often with Eric Clapton who was his best friend. Those who knew him always said he was gentle and agreeable, “a musician’s musician.”

Like all the other Beatles, George Harrison was Knighted by Her Majesty the Queen of England. He had many Grammy Awards and is listed as the 21st Best Guitarist of All Time according to Rolling Stone magazine. Besides his many musical awards, he got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009. So George was quieter and shunned the limelight, and he leaves an enigmatic legacy, but he was a genius like the other Beatles!

I Need You
The First George Harrison Song

This was the first song George wrote for the Beatles and it has a unique chord structure. I just loved the song, and immediately looked up the record to see who wrote it. Surprise, it wasn’t Paul! So there was our first clue that George had lyrical ability too.

“On Rubber Soul” he had a song, “If I Needed Someone” which explored the same type of chord structure in a more fully realized form, and it was a beautiful song too. He was showing his ability, but my God, it was Paul McCartney and John Lennon he was competing with! Hard to get a toehold, you know? One of my favorite songs by him and it definitely belongs on a list of the best George Harrison songs.

Abbey Road – Beatles songs, Without a doubt, my favorite Beatles’ album of all time, and both “Here Comes the Sun”, and “Something” are on it!

Excerpt from Amazon: The Beatles’ last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side’s writing, John Lennon’s hard-rocking, “Come Together” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” make the strongest impression.

My Sweet Lord
George Harrison Songs List

My Sweet Lord is one of my favorites of George’s songs. I don’t believe for one second that he ripped it off, even though he lost his lawsuit. He could write amazing lyrics and music so why would he copy? Plus it‘s a worship song. How anyone could think he would steal a worship song strains imagination. As a lifelong meditator, I really love the Buddhist chants later on in the song.

Ironically, and this is not very well known, the judge in the case suggested an elegant solution. He also did not believe George ripped it off, but said it was probably subliminally noticed, and thus influenced his song. His solution was to have George buy the company that owned the rights to “He’s So Fine” and therefore he would not be infringing as he would now own the rights to the original song. So the other company got paid off, which is why they brought suit in the first place, and George owned both songs. End of problem. Except as an artist who had done no wrong, it had to burn a little to have that judgement recorded. Still, against all his millions, a judgement and payoff of $700,000 and change was better than it could have been, by far.

Here is George’s masterpiece!

All Things Must Pass
Lots of George Harrison Best Songs

All Things Must PassGeorge Harrison Songs List

George’s epic Masterpiece album, with lots of genius music. My Sweet Lord is on this one! George had lots of songs backlogged because since Paul and John were so prolific, and he was younger, they didn’t give him much play, so to speak. So he just kept them and put them all on “All Things Must Pass.” That’s why it’s a triple album!

Excerpt from Amazon: No amount of grumpy auto-revisionism can subtract from the admittedly overwrought majesty of these tracks, which were the logical sonic extension of Abbey Road. It remains Harrison’s unequaled masterpiece. The devolved “My Sweet Lord” aside, the bonus tracks here offer new insight: the unreleased “I Live for You” further highlights the album’s oft overlooked country facet; spare takes of “Beware of Darkness” and “Let It Down” underscore the strength of Harrison’s songwriting; an alternate backing track of “What Is Life” demonstrates the meticulousness of Spector’s production. And then there’s the project’s truly stellar session lineup, which included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman, Jim Gordon, Dave Mason, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ginger Baker, Carl Radle, Gary Brooker, Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Pete Drake and, it turns out, even Phil Collins!

Excerpt from Amazon: As the Beatles’ perpetual dark horse, Harrison rarely got the chance to write and sing more than one or two songs per album. But once the band split up, the former “quiet one” was quick out of the gate with a series of memorable hit singles that seamlessly merged his budding spirituality and an epic, Phil Spector-inspired pop sensibility. This collection, originally released in 1976, combines seven of Harrison’s best-known Beatles numbers, including “Something,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with a half-dozen early solo hits including “My Sweet Lord,” “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth),” “You,” and “What Is Life.”

Imagine Song, John Lennon

Imagine, John Lennon’s Masterpiece

Imagine Song, John Lennon

IMAGINE, NO, Heaven, Hell, Countries, Religion, john lennon quotes

Imagine, by John Lennon, is my favorite song of all time.
Imagine. One little word that embodies so much possibility, so much promise, so much hope… by imagining we can change the whole world, one little step at a time. I keep a little sign on my desk that says it: simply “Imagine.”

Before John Lennon wrote the song Imagine, I’ll bet few thought of the power of that word. After he wrote it, the word became a legendary slogan of powerful potential. Such is the power of John Lennon’s vision! It’s a simple song, and a simple tune, but it’s very moving. The words present a utopian vision of the future, and it became his most famous song after he was taken from us too soon. Of course John wrote many fantastic songs both with the Beatles and afterward on his own. But the Imagine song is his most famous.

I lived through Beatlemania, and I had all the music, all the posters, all the books, and all the memorabilia that I could ever get my hands on. I loved all the Beatles, individually and collectively, and most of their songs, but the Imagine song by John Lennon is still my favorite song of all time. I have included a few “Imagine” posters, and a few John Lennon quotes sprinkled throughout the page.

Enjoy!

Imagine Lyrics By John Lennon

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one I
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one.

 Imaginejohn lennon quotes

Amazon says this: Imagine John Lennon comes from a treasure trove: the legendary musician’s own collection of more than 240 hours of film and videotape, much of it never seen by the public. With cooperation from Yoko Ono in its creation, producers David L. Wolper and Andrew Solt (partners on This Is Elvis) transform the archival footage – and a monumental 36-tune soundtrack – into a spellbinding account of a complex, fascinating man. Lennon’s own voice narrates “a classic film biography” (Roy Leonard, WGN-TV/Chicago).

“I’m not claiming divinity.
I’ve never claimed purity of soul.
I’ve never claimed to have the answers to life.
I only put out songs
and answer questions as honestly as I can…
But I still believe in
peace, love and understanding.”

John was actually a bit of a philosopher, and a deep thinker. Like many creative people, He was multi talented in the Arts. He not only wrote amazing songs and lyrics, he also wrote poetry and short stories and was an artist.

Ten years ago a tour of his artworks made its way around the USA. and I went to see it in Monterey, California. The drawings were quite charming.

The Day John Lennon Died
John Lennon Memories

Some days will never be forgotten. In my life, the death of John Lennon was one of those days, a day that marked the end of childhood.

I still remember exactly where I was when I heard the news, and the conversation I had with my husband as soon as he got to work. We heard it on the radio while he was driving there and I was at home in the kitchen. The shock of all shocks! The Beatles could never get back together now! Childhood was over.

You can also see it here: Imagine Tower of Peace

The Imagine Tower of Peace is located in Iceland, and the location was chosen by John’s widow, Yoko Ono, because of Iceland’s use of geothermal energy which is clean energy. Construction began on October 9, 2006 and was completed October 9, 2007 when she dedicated it. It is lighted every year from October 9-December 8, the day John was murdered in New York City.

The white stone monument that the lights emanate from is carved with the words “Imagine Peace” in 24 languages, a reference to “Imagine”, John’s wonderful song about Peace. Yoko has said that the tower is the best thing she and John ever did.

“Yeah we all shine on,
like the moon, and the stars, and the sun.”
