Carol’s Theme (Excerpt)
I’m so glad we had this time together
Just to have a laugh, or sing a song
Seems we just get started
and before you know it …
The Carol Burnett Show
Winner of 25 Prime-Time Emmy Awards
The Carol Burnett Show
Produced at CBS Television City’s Studio 33
(The Bob Barker Studio)
The Carol Burnett Show aired on the CBS network from September 11, 1967 to March 29, 1978, during which time 278 episodes were produced. In addition to Carol Burnett, the popular variety show starred Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner, Tim Conway, and Dick Van Dyke.
Guests included Hollywood’s brightest stars, such as Lucille Ball, Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Barbara Eden, Shirley Jones, Shirley MacLaine, Steve Martin, Jim Nabors, Vincent Price, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, and Jonathan Winters.
Viewers embraced the show’s comedic sketches, and several are legendary. In Went With the Wind, a parody of Gone With the Wind, Carol Burnett portrayed Scarlett O’Hara in the famous gown made from a window curtain—including the curtain rod! The popular soap opera, As the World Turns was spoofed in recurring sketches called As the Stomach Turns. The long-running show won 25 prime-time Emmy Awards, and was listed as one of Time magazine’s “100 Best TV Shows of All Time.” The show was also ranked #17 on TV Guide’s list of the “60 Greatest Shows of All Time.”

Everybody just told me from the day I went into high school that I looked like Carol Burnett.
Carol Burnett Show Theme Song
Written and Composed by Joe Hamilton
The program ended with Carol singing the show’s signature theme song and tugging her left ear. Carol’s Theme, also known as I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together was written by Carol Burnett’s husband, Joe Hamilton. Regular viewers anticipated her ear tug at the end of each show. The gesture was a message to Carol Burnett’s grandmother who had raised her, letting her know that she loved her. The tradition continued even after her grandmother passed on.
